How It Works:
The TVGuardian monitors the hidden closed-captioning signal and compares those words to it's database of over 100 offensive words and phrases. When an offensive word is detected it mutes the sound for the sentence and displays a replacement text on the screen.
For a sample of actual TVGuardian results in the Strict mode setting, see TVGuardian Results.

Please Note: The TVGuardian technology is a very unique and revolutionary product that uses the closed-captioning to detect and mute profanity. This technology has some limitations and is not perfect.
- The VHS video, DVD movie or television show must have concurrent closed-captioning. DVDs distributed by Universal Studios will not work with the TVGuardian because they do not use closed captioning with their DVD's. VHS videos from Universal Studios WILL work with the TVGuardian.
- The TV Guardian detects profanity by reading the closed-captioning signal. Occasionally, because of errors in the closed-captioning signal, bad words may slip through.
Your DVD Player must have the ability to decode the close-captioning. Some may have difficulty working with the TVGuardian. See a list of incompatible DVD Players and learn how to test yours.
- The TVGuardian set-top box does NOT Work with TV/VCR or TV/DVD built-in combo units. The TV Guardian works literally as a filter. It must be hooked up between the source (VCR, DVD, Tuner, etc.) and your TV.
- The TV Guardian doesn't work with HD programming. Component video (red, green and blue video) connections are not supported. This connection is most commonly used with HDTV devices. Using the TVG with High Definition devices is a bit complicated.
- Most Satellite/Cable receivers do not pass through closed-captions when using the HD connections. Component and HDMI connections have been tested. The TVG 201 and TVG 301 set-top boxes cannot work unless it can read the captions.
- A workaround would be to connect the composite (RCA or yellow) video cable to the TVG set-top box and have the digital audio connections pass through the TVG to the TV or surround sound receiver. TVG could read the captions and mute the digital audio, but it would not display the modified captions. Not ideal, but the best that is available right now.
