A message to eBay: Please look at my regulatory statements made below to assure that there is no legal or ethical issues regarding the possession and transfer of these items.
This is a multiple item lot. The item titles are in bold, descriptions follow. Last chance on some of these items! My stock is dwindling!
#1 This is a
very nice, VERY RADIOACTIVE specimen, a very rare AUTHENTIC
FIESTAWARE plate in radioactive red (Picture 3). It puts off a very respectable 62,000
counts per minute... (Always with a calibrated Bicron Surveyor M with 44-9
Pancake Probe, so it's combined alpha/beta/gamma reading.) That's a hot
plate. It's beautiful, in very good condition, with a few very minor
scratches and blemishes, as it was used for several years. There are
some minimal marks and imperfections like nearly all the plates from
this era, if you have purchased these before you know what I'm talking
about.
This will make a GREAT geiger counter
test source, class/science demonstration, or even part of a collection
of fine pottery for those people who don't care that this plate is
SUPER RADIOACTIVE! It's not easy to find genuine, stamped radioactive
red fiesta plates. This is something that would give a
physics enthusiast serious bragging rights... Believe me, you want this
plate.
#2 This is another
very nice, VERY RADIOACTIVE specimen, an excellent Gladding
McBean plate in radioactive red (Picture 2). It puts out an incredible
77,000 counts per minute... (As always, calibrated Bicron Surveyor M
with 44-9 Pancake Probe, so it's combined alpha/beta/gamma reading.)
GMB plates are unique because the glazes are very deep and very smooth,
thicker than the glazes on Homer Laughlin plates, so there aren't a
bunch of obvious thinner or thicker spots on the surface. This plate is
almost perfect... The 3 marks forming the triangle on the bottom of the
plate are from the stand it was placed on when it was being fired, all
glazed plates have these. Other than that, it's absolutely flawless. Plate up for bid is the actual plate pictured.
This will
make a GREAT geiger counter test source, class/science demonstration,
or collectors item, and it is SUPER RADIOACTIVE! You'll love it.
#3 Relisted for
you after clearing up some regulatory issues, this is a RADIOACTIVE, 8
inch (estimated) dinner plate made (Picture 4) with a type of glass similar to
depression/vaseline glass, although it lacks some of the
characteristics... First off, it's perfectly crystal clear. Second, it
doesn't glow under UV light. Still, it has that beautiful yellow
uranium based color, and it is radioactive. It puts off about at least
2400 counts per minute (on my Bicron Surveyor M with 44-9 Pancake
Probe). It'll make a great test source for a geiger counter or a great
part of a collection of hot items. This item will appeal to people who
need a source that puts out more gamma than normal, like those with
gamma scintillation probes or people who want to experiement with
those...
This item is
unique because of the abnormally high proportion of gamma radiation
that it puts out. It puts out a little less than three times the gamma
that a 61,000 CPM fiestaware plate puts out, while this item still only
puts out about 2400 counts per minute combined on a standard pancake
probe.
Fiestaware plate: 61,000 CPM combined on pancake probe, 8,000 CPM gamma only on a gamma scintillation probe
This plate: 2400 CPM combined on pancake probe, 21,000 CPM gamma only on a scintillation probe
That is a
seriously HUGE proportional difference, bordering on EXTREME. If you
need further explanation or clarification, please don't hesitate to
ask. I don't know why this is the way it is, if you know please tell
me! perhaps the colorant has a higher proportion of radium than
average? Regardless, it was a big surprise to me. All scintillation
probes are different, so the specific count rates may be more or less
depending on your equipment. Just know that the amount of gamma
radiation relative to alpha and beta was much higher than normal.
This plate
is used and has some light, almost unnoticable knife scratches and
such. It has no brand or markings on it, and is therefore not something
that I can trace or get any more details about. It appears that it was
used for many years, although it is still in fantastic condition. It
really is a very beautiful item. The picture doesn't do it justice,
it's fantastic.
#4&5 Here we have two thorium lantern mantles included in this package (Picture 1). The Thorium content makes it nice and radioactive. It's about four inches high. It's new, unused. AT LEAST 7,000 counts per minute on surface, about twice that if folded in half. That's on a calibrated Bicron Surveyor M with 44-9 pancake probe, as shown in the picture on the x10 setting. Mantles vary slightly in activity. Every mantle will be checked before shipping to ensure that it is at least 7,000 counts per minute, surface reading, unfolded and out of the bag. These are very high quality mantles and are hotter than most others that I have seen on the market. You'll enjoy this very high quality item. Please note, if you're using a CDV 700 Geiger Counter, your count rate will be lower. I don't know how much lower it will be, because most of those counters out there are not properly calibrated.
Please check my other auctions for unique and rare radioactive items. Because I sell just a few items, I'm able to ship the items on the next business day after receiving your payment. Exceptions are rare, but you will be notified if there's going to be any sort of delay in getting the item out. It has never taken me more than two days to get an item in the mail.
Please note that there is NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING under any circumstances, as regulations for shipping these items only cover the United States of America. Insurance is $1.70, and is required on this auction because of the high volume of breakable items. I pack VERY well, but I can not be held responsible for what happens in the mail.
Be respectful, help make eBay a pleasant experience. Some buyers have been really terrible since the rules have changed. I have been extorted on two separate occasions since June 24th by buyers with 100% positive ratings. Take what you see with a grain of salt, please don't make assumptions about a sellers reputation until you get the whole story, and please don't assume that a buyer is going to be good to you just because they have nice comments and high scores. There are a lot of people who will lie and cheat to get a few bucks worth of free stuff. I see a lot of sellers disappearing, mainly the small volume sellers that have the most unique and eclectic selection of items. I'm a good seller. I'll do whatever I can to give you a good experience. I'll answer any questions you have, even if you don't intend to bid. I value treating the customer well. I believe that a satisfied buyer is a successful story. I'm on eBay because I want to share this hobby with other people and make extra money to support the hobby. Just because a seller can't expose people who habitually commit fraud doesn't mean that it's ok to do it. Please keep this in mind while browsing all of eBay, particularly my pages!

This mantle is new, unused and undamaged. No returns on this item. This specimen is safe to handle and use. I wouldn't recommend taping it to a pregnant womans belly or attaching it to a belt buckle, but it's still fairly safe. Not for use as a prophylactic device, despite its appearence. Geiger counter is not included, obviously. Your measurements may vary, as you will be using a different counter and probe. I do use calibrated equipment to measure the activity levels.
Paypal only. USPS will be used for shipping most of the time, although I reserve the right to change carriers. This item will be shipped within all regulatory standards. This item is legal, exempt from NRC licensing. Shipping and handling is 3.95, insurance is optional, but it's not likely that this item will be damaged in transit. Still, I can not be held responsible for what happens during shipping, so it is up to you.
No reserve, please don't hesitate to bid high, says me!
On Jul-23-08 at 10:24:13 PDT, seller added the following information:To answer a couple of new questions (and one old one) that were asked, I'm revising the post...
1. "are the plates just the 1s that noone else wants?"
Answer: No, this specific auction is a package filled with high quality items that was going to be shipped to a gentleman in New York. He bought these items from me on another trading venue that doesn't have the safety and security benefits of eBay. I was never paid for it... Instead of unpacking and selling the items seperately, I figured that somebody on eBay would really want this set exactly like it is.
2. "will you sell the items separatly? how much would that be?"
Answer: I'm starting to put up individual items again, and I do have some similar items that will be auctioned very soon. If you have something specific in mind, email me and I'll let you know if I have it.
3. (a question from a previous auction) "sir, im looking for some of this stuff in mint condition do you have any of those in your collection?"
Answer: Yes! The majority of my items are in good or very good condition. Aside from that, I usually sell my collector quality items in person, because it's very difficult to determine the quality and condition via photographs only. My current collector quality plates are 8 and 12 inch radioactive red California Pottery plates in near mint. I'd be surprised if anybody is interested in them, but they do exist.
